Beccles is a cute market town in the Waveney District of Suffolk, England, UK, close to an area known as The Broads. The town of Beccles is just over 100 miles from London, 16 miles south east of the city of Norwich in Norfolk. Nearby towns include Lowestoft and Great Yarmouth. In the 2001 census of there were around 14,000 inhabitants living in Beccles and the suburb of Worlingham. Beccles is twinned with Petit-Couronne in France. Beccles is a popular commuter town with good rail links and in the summer the town is very popular with visitors to Suffolk and the Broads, hoping to enjoy the great outdoors and all the charm of the Suffolk market town.

Beccles has a vibrant town centre with lots of independent shops, high street brands and a great selection of pubs and restaurants. Possessing all the charm one would expect from a historic Suffolk market town, Beccles is a great place to visit all year round. Being so close to The Broads, one of the major tourist areas is Beccles Quay, which attracts visitors of all ages. Beccles Quay, has a small shop, a well established tourist information centre with public toilets opposite the tourist centre. There is a pub which provides refreshments daily, a kids play area, and Marshland Trail Walks. During the first week of August each and every year this area of Beccles becomes very lively as it is the focal point of many of the well known Beccles Carnival events, which culminates in a spectacular Firework display on the last evening.

A bit of History About Beccles in Suffolk

Beccles was originally a flourishing Saxon river port, as it sits in the Waveney valley which is why today Beccles is a popular boating centre. The town was first granted its Charter in 1584 by Elizabeth I. One of the towns most famous figures was Sir John Leman (who died 1632). He was a tradesman from Beccles who went on to became Lord Mayor of London. Under the Municipal Corporations Act 1835 the borough was reformed, Beccles retaining municipal borough status until the reorganisation of local government in 1974, when it was merged with surrounding authorities to become Waveney District. The successor civil parish has adopted town status. The main football team in Beccles is Beccles Town F.C, who were established in 1919. Chris Martin, the Norwich City Footballer is the most recent high profile person to emerge from Beccles in Suffolk.
